Food Challenge Write Up:
We started off with over 40 participants. No one was required to give the cash buy-in until after they got all the information. Everyone seemed to understand the guidelines of what the challenge was and my expectations from them. All they had to do was log their food every day and:
- Eat real food
- Take fish oil
- Not eat grains
- Not eat legumes
- Not eat sugar
- Not eat processed food
- Not drink alcohol
Surprisingly, I got the most complaints of alcohol (so I dubbed it not only a Paleo challenge, but also a detox program). We took measurements, weights, “before” pictures, and a quick workout, and the participants were on their way!
As most of the participants can tell you, the first week was hell. I got complaints left and right. I told them to suck it up, and keep going. Over the course of the month, I could see their attitudes changing (everyone was allowed to see each other’s food logs) and their bodies were getting used to the change. It was awesome!
At the end of the challenge, I received a lot of comments from participants about how much they loved the challenge and could really see the difference in how their clothes feel, how much weight they lost, and a dramatic change in their performance (one person got 5 PR’s that month!). Suffice it to say, Paleo rocks!
We ended the last day with a potluck, and most everyone kept the dishes Paleo-friendly (which means they were allowed sugar). We also announced the winners:
Males Females
Weight lost: Jeff Concepcion Naomi Dizon
Inches lost: Justin Mendoza Lisa Schetzel
WOD time (difference): Kevin Eclarino Cori Borja
Most points: Ryan Edra Alice Kim
The last category was the overall composition (how they look in the “before” and “after” pictures). This category is the reason why I took so long to give a write up on the challenge. So, without further a due, the winners are:
Male: Daniel
Female: Jyoti
Congrats! Come see me so I can give you your prize!
Overall, the challenge was great, and I had an awesome time leading it (of course with the help of Vito, Christina, Zander, Helina, and Alice). I hope everyone that participated had a blast sharing recipes, commenting on each other’s logs, and really understood that Paleo is NOT a diet. It’s a lifestyle change! Look out for more of these in the future…
Jenn
